§1 Who We Are
ScreenBudget is a screen time budgeting tool for families, operated by Polsia ("we," "us," or "our"). We provide parents and guardians with tools to set per-site time budgets on their children's devices.
This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, and how it's protected. By using ScreenBudget, you agree to this policy.
§2 What Data We Collect
We collect only what's needed to make ScreenBudget work. Here's exactly what that is:
Parent/Guardian Account Data
- Email address (used for login and account communication)
- Password (stored as a one-way bcrypt hash — we cannot see it)
- Account creation date and last login
Child Profile Data
- Child's name or nickname (you choose what to enter — first name, nickname, or alias)
- The site budgets you configure for that child (e.g., "YouTube: 30 min/day")
Usage Data
- Time spent on sites that have an active budget (tracked per-child)
- Site URLs visited when a budget is active on that site
- Budget reset timestamps
We do not collect:
- Full browsing history (only budgeted sites)
- Device identifiers or hardware information
- Location data
- Biometric data
- Any data from children who are not linked to a parent account
§3 Chrome Extension Data
The ScreenBudget Chrome extension runs on your child's browser to enforce time budgets. Here's what the extension does:
- Monitors active tab URL — to check if the current site has a budget configured by the parent
- Tracks time spent — counts time on budgeted sites and syncs the total to our server
- Blocks or warns — when the daily budget for a site is reached
The extension connects to your ScreenBudget account using a secure token stored in Chrome's local extension storage. It does not store browsing data locally beyond the current session's tab activity.
The extension does not execute on any page for unauthenticated users. If the parent's account is deleted, the extension stops sending data immediately.
§4 How We Store Your Data
All data is stored in a PostgreSQL database hosted on Neon (a managed cloud database provider). Here's how we protect it:
- Encryption in transit: All connections use TLS 1.2+ (HTTPS). Data never travels unencrypted.
- Encryption at rest: Neon encrypts database storage at rest using AES-256.
- Password hashing: Passwords are hashed using bcrypt before storage. We cannot recover your password.
- Authentication tokens: Session tokens are short-lived JWTs signed with a secret key.
- Database access: Our database is not publicly accessible. It only accepts connections from our application server.
Our application server is hosted on Render in the United States. Data is stored and processed in the United States.
§5 Who Has Access
Access to your family's data is strictly limited:
- You (the parent/guardian): Full access to your account and all child profile data through your login.
- ScreenBudget engineering team: Limited access to database infrastructure for maintenance and bug fixes. We do not browse user data routinely.
- No third-party analytics: We do not sell data to advertisers. We do not share child usage data with any third party.
We will disclose data if required by law (e.g., a valid legal order), but we will notify affected users whenever legally permitted to do so.
§6 COPPA & Children's Privacy
ScreenBudget is designed for parents and guardians, not for children to use directly. We comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
The data associated with a "child profile" is created and controlled entirely by the parent/guardian. The child's name you enter is a label for your own reference — it is not verified, and you may use a nickname or alias.
If you believe we have inadvertently collected information from a child under 13 without parental consent, please contact us immediately at screenbudget@polsia.app and we will delete it promptly.
§7 Data Retention
We retain your data as follows:
- Account data: Retained while your account is active. Deleted within 30 days of account deletion.
- Usage/tracking data: Per-site usage logs are retained for 90 days, then automatically purged. This is sufficient for weekly and monthly trend views in your dashboard.
- Child profiles: Retained until you delete the profile or your account. Deleting a child profile immediately removes all associated usage data.
- Billing data: Subscription records are retained for 7 years as required by financial regulations. These records contain only email and payment identifiers — not browsing data.
§8 Deleting Your Account & Data
You have the right to delete your data at any time.
To delete a child profile: Go to your Dashboard → select the child → click "Delete Profile." All usage data for that child is deleted immediately.
To delete your account: Email screenbudget@polsia.app with the subject "Delete My Account." We will permanently delete your account and all associated data (child profiles, usage history, email address) within 5 business days. You'll receive a confirmation email when it's done.
Note: We cannot recover deleted accounts. Billing records (transaction IDs only) may be retained as required by law.
§9 Third-Party Services
ScreenBudget uses a small set of trusted third-party services to operate:
- Neon — Database hosting. Privacy Policy
- Render — Application server hosting. Privacy Policy
- Stripe — Payment processing (for Pro and Family subscriptions). Stripe handles payment data — we never see or store full card numbers. Privacy Policy
None of these providers receive child usage or browsing data. They receive only what's necessary to operate their specific service (e.g., Stripe receives your email and payment details for billing).
